Hi, I’m Zan Stewart. I play tenor and alto saxophone, and I sing and scat sing. For around 50 years, I have been a student of jazz improvising; it’s a lifelong pursuit, and a happy one. I’ve had a good time in everything from practice sessions to performing with many notables. I currently perform in the Bay Area, leading duos, trios and the Zan Stewart Band, featuring top SF-area jazz players.

My saxophone teaching method focuses on building solid technique and getting a good sound. With a good sound, what you play sounds good. To develop your approach, we work on pieces you might like to play, or I can suggest some. Reading music is not essential, but can be helpful, and we can work on developing your reading skills. The point is to keep you interested so that you practice. Putting in practice time is what leads to improvement, no question. Lessons are designed to be enjoyable so that the student finds a joy that leads to practicing.

My improv style is based around my love of swinging with solid melodies and hip notes. In terms of tone, I try to sing through my horn. My favorites include saxophonists Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins, trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, and pianists Bud Powell and Wynton Kelly.I build my teaching approach around on what I have found to work, stressing the fundamentals of good rhythm and good note choices. By studying both the masters and the music that you make up, we work on developing a personal improv vocabulary, the one you will use in expressing the song inside you, a song we all have.

I welcome all instruments.

In addition to my horn playing, I also sing, and scat sing, which is use syllables in a rhythmic and melodic manner. One of the cool things about scatting is that you can do it to any kind of music. This is a great way to have fun with music. I have been scatting for over 50 years, and know what works. And if you’re already a professional and want to scat or take your scatting to a higher level, I have ideas and methods that will deliver results.I can also help singers, both beginners and advanced, offering ideas and methods based on years of listening to top pros and singing myself in my performances.

Another distinctive aspect of my teaching is to offer nuggets of information that I gleaned from the greats themselves while working as a music journalist specializing in jazz from 1975-2010.

My home studio is located in East Richmond Heights in the East Bay, and I prefer to work here, though I’m willing to travel a bit. Rates are reasonable but flexible. Wanting to help is most important. Initial consultation is free.
